A ‘buddy bench’ has been designed and created at Peasedown St John Primary School as part of a new initiative to help create new friendships.
The project was a collaboration between the school’s Eco Team and Pupil Voice Team.
School Headteacher, Ruth Noall, explains:
“Our Eco Team, led by Sarah Pitt, joined forces with our Pupil Voice Team, led by Louise Dallimore, to research, make and present a recycled Buddy Bench.
Presented to the whole school during the last week of term, the bench is eco-friendly because it is not made of new wood – but rather from an old bunk bed!
It’s painted pale blue because it is a calm colour and includes a rainbow as part of the design as it’s part of our school symbol.”
The school’s Pupil Voice Team wanted to have a Buddy Bench installed in the playground so that no-one feels alone and left out in the playground.
“If a child’s friend is away, they can sit on the bench and someone can come and sit with them,” added Ruth, “our new Buddy Bench is also about creating new friendships when our pupils need it the most.”
The creation of the bench also comes as a result of a school survey where children were asked what made them happy or worried in school and some people were worried about not having anyone to play with at break or lunch time.
