UK — A courageous team of British ocean rowers is entering the final two-week countdown before flying out to the start line of a historic, world-first expedition. On June 1st, the four-person Brainwaves crew, proudly powered by headline sponsor Evolution Capital, will depart the UK for Western Australia, where they will begin a gruelling 5,500-mile, completely unsupported row across the Indian Ocean to Kenya.
The crew—comprising Billy Taylor, Lara Vafiadis, Susannah Cass, and Glyn Roberts—is aiming to make two historic World Records: becoming the first mixed crew and the first women to ever successfully complete this specific continent-to-continent crossing by human power alone.
Living on a cramped 28-foot rowing boat with zero luxury, zero plumbing, and a relentless schedule of two hours of rowing followed by two hours of sleep, the team expects to spend between 80 to 100 days at sea. They will navigate some of the world’s most hostile marine environments, battling 40-foot swells, intense tropical heat, and absolute isolation.
Beyond the extreme physical trial, the Brainwaves expedition will serve as an active platform for vital environmental and medical research. The crew will carry out onboard scientific data collection throughout the 5,500-mile crossing, including sampling for microplastic pollution to map ocean health, alongside studies into the positive impacts of intense exercise on mental health, anxiety, and PTSD.
Crucially, the team is taking the next generation along for the ride. Partnering with Learn Live UK, an educational platform reaching over 3,000 schools, the crew will host live video chats directly from the water into classrooms. This world-first educational link will engage students in real-world STEM lessons, geography, and ocean conservation, showing young people the true power of human resilience.
The row is raising vital funds and awareness for two charities at the forefront of brain health and recovery: Race Against Dementia and Rock2Recovery.
Lara Vafiadis, crew member, commented:
“Rowing an ocean changes your perspective on human capability entirely. This time, we aren’t just pushing our bodies to break world records; we are capturing data that could protect our oceans and change how we understand mental resilience. Through our partnership with Learn Live, we get to bring this adventure straight to school children to inspire them to step away from screens and realise they can overcome any challenge. With the incredible backing of Evolution Capital as our headline partner, we are powering through the final two-week scramble to secure our last technical equipment before we fly on June 1st. The Indian Ocean is unpredictable and terrifying, but our team is ready.”
With just days remaining the expedition is making a final call to corporate partners and technology sponsors who want to join Evolution Capital on a global stage and back a historic British world-first.
