A much-loved figure in Midsomer Norton has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of more than five decades of outstanding service to the community.
John Dando received the award at a special event held at Welton Rovers Football Club, organised by Midsomer Norton Town Council and presented by Cllr Gordon Mackay.
Mr Dando, a lifelong resident of the town, has played an integral role in community life for over 50 years. His contributions span a remarkable range of activities, from youth leadership to cultural events and local organisations.
Beginning as a Scout leader, he went on to help revive the Midsomer Norton Carnival in the 1970s and was a key figure in the White Hart Carnival Club. He also helped organise the town’s first Half Marathon and played an important part in establishing the role of the Town Crier.
His passion for music and the arts has left a lasting mark on the town. Mr Dando ran both the White Hart Folk Club and the Mendip Packet Folk Club, organised folk festivals, and regularly served as Master of Ceremonies at community events. He continues to perform at local acoustic music nights, maintaining his connection with the town’s vibrant cultural scene.
In addition to his work in events and entertainment, Mr Dando has served as a School Governor and contributed to numerous organisations, including the Lifeboat Committee, SPADES, the Town Traders Association, and the Midsomer Norton Community Trust, where he was one of its first Directors.
Even in retirement, his commitment continues. He volunteers at Radstock Museum, helping educate younger generations about the area’s mining heritage. Since joining the Rotary Club in 2019, and now serving as President, he has also supported charitable fundraising, most recently for SENSE.
The award recognises a lifetime of dedication, generosity, and unwavering community spirit.
