Peasedown Primary School pupils visit the Victoria Art Gallery

Children from Peasedown St John Primary School have taken part in a special trip – to the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath.

Pupils from Year 2 were given the opportunity for an afternoon out to explore one of the local area’s most popular tourist attractions.

School Headteacher, Ruth Noall, said:

“Year 2 had a fantastic trip to the Victoria Art Gallery recently!

They took part in a workshop, where children started by looking at a range of portraits in the top gallery, and thinking about what they were told about the people in the paintings. Pupils then created their own self-portraits using pastels and collage and also enjoyed dressing up in Victorian costumes.

It was wonderful to have the opportunity to explore the Lost Spells exhibition, where everyone enjoyed dressing up as animals, listening to stories and pretending to be a badger in a tunnel!

The children were all brilliant representatives for our school, showing curiosity and resilience.”

Located in the centre of Bath, the Victoria Art Gallery opened in 1900 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Victoria. It’s a Grade II* listed building and houses over 1,500 objects of art including a collection of oil paintings from British artists dating from 1700 onwards. The gallery attracts almost 100,000 visitors per year.

“Learning about the history of different cultures and counties is vital part of our curriculum here at Peasedown St John Primary School,” added Ruth, “so it’s fantastic to have a museum dedicated to the Queen Victoria and the era that surrounds her reign on our doorstep.”
