Update on A36 Beckford Road and canal tunnel

Bath & North East Somerset Council is urging people to check its dedicated webpage for the latest updates on work to repair the A36 Beckford Road and canal tunnel.

Last month the tunnel was affected by a structural issue identified during improvement works the council is undertaking to make the location better for walking and cycling.

Safety is the council’s first priority. The tunnel and footpath are temporarily closed and temporary two-way traffic signals are in place on the A36 Beckford Road.

The council, Canal & River Trust, Historic England and the contractor are working closely together to carry out surveys, further investigation and design work. Necessary approvals need to be secured before permanent repairs can begin.

Repairing the canal tunnel, which is owned by the Canal and River Trust, is complex because it is an historic structure. It is anticipated work could continue into 2027.

The council will post further information and updates on this webpage: https://www.bathnes.gov.uk/a36-beckford-road-and-bath-no1-tunnel
