Children living in Peasedown St John had the opportunity to take part in a Summer Reading Challenge during the school holidays.
Run by B&NES Council’s Library Services, children across the local authority could take books out from their local library, and when they did, they’d automatically be entered into the challenge.
Peasedown Community Library Operations Manager and local councillor, Karen Walker (Independent), said:
“The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays, providing lots of fun as well as helping to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’.
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme was ‘Read to the Beat’ – a book collection featuring 55 captivating titles for different reading levels, including picture books, early readers, and middle grade titles, as well as dyslexia-friendly titles.
With a mix of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and graphic novels, the collection was carefully curated to engage young minds with the magic of music with the input of reading specialists and an expert reading panel.”
Last Saturday morning, children in Peasedown St John who successfully took part in the challenge were invited to visit the village’s community library to collect their medals and certificates.
Cllr Karen Walker added:
“Congratulations to Isaac and the other children who took part from Peasedown St John. Reading is an essential life skill, so encouraging our youngsters to read from a young age, for fun, is important.
We’ve got a huge selection of children’s books at the library, so even though the Summer Reading Challenge is over we look forward to seeing children and their parents visit us again soon.”
